Gas logs offer the warmth and beauty of a wood-burning fireplace without the hassle. These fireplaces use natural or propane gas and synthetic logs to create an appealing heat source. To control the flames, you can use a thermostat, remote control, or switch. While most gas fireplaces come with a switch mounted under the fireplace, you may prefer to install a remote switch for easier accessibility.

Step 1

Start by turning the control switch on the gas fireplace to the “Off” position.

Step 2

Refer to the instructions provided by the fireplace manufacturer to choose a suitable location for mounting the wall switch. Use the gang-box template included in the package and place it on the wall at the chosen location. Trace the template with a pencil and use a drywall saw to cut along the traced line. Insert the gang box into the hole and tighten the retaining screws using a Phillips screwdriver.

Step 3

Next, run a section of two-conductor, low-voltage wire from the single-gang box to the control panel of the gas fireplace.

Step 4

Strip 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of the wire. Attach the provided spade connectors to the stripped ends of the wires in the gas fireplace control panel. Make sure to crimp the connectors securely. Then, slide the spade connectors onto the spade terminals on the back of the switch in the control panel. Alternatively, you can connect them directly to the pigtail wires, if they are already installed.

Step 5

Turn the wall switch to the “Off” position. Insert the stripped ends of the wires in the single-gang box into the terminals on the back of the wall switch. Press the wires into the terminals until they are securely in place.

Step 6

Tuck the wires into the gang box and insert the wall switch into the box. Use a Phillips screwdriver to tighten the retaining screws. Finally, place the cover plate over the wall switch and tighten the retaining screws using a flat screwdriver.

Step 7

To activate the fireplace, turn the wall switch to the “On” position.
