Installation of Gila Window Film

Quck answer

To install Gila Window Film, follow these steps:

1. Measure the window: Measure the width and height of the window you want to apply the film to. Cut the film slightly larger than the window size.

2. Clean the window: Thoroughly clean the window with a mild detergent and water solution. Remove any dirt, dust, or debris.

3. Wet the glass: Spray the window with a water and soap solution to make it easier to apply the film.

4. Remove the backing: Peel off the backing of the film to expose the adhesive side.

5. Apply the film: Carefully place the adhesive side of the film onto the wet glass. Smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles using a squeegee or a credit card.

6. Trim the excess film: Use a utility knife or scissors to trim the excess film around the edges of the window.

7. Let it dry: Allow the film to dry for at least 24 hours before cleaning or opening the window.

Large windows offer a clear view and ample sunlight. However, too much sunlight can be overwhelming and compromise privacy. Gila window film is a simple solution that provides durability, attractiveness, and easy installation. These tinted window films reduce glare, increase privacy, and provide insulation. It is recommended to apply Gila film with the help of someone else and always on the inside of the glass.

Materials Needed

  • Glass cleaner

  • Clean, lint-free shop cloths

  • Rubber squeegee, 4-to-5-inches wide

  • Measuring tape

  • Straightedge

  • Utility knife plus extra blades

  • Gila window film

  • Transparent tape

  • Gila application solution and trimming tool

How to Apply Gila Window Film

Step 1: Clean the Window Exterior

Thoroughly clean the outside of the window by spraying glass cleaner and using a clean shop cloth. Pay extra attention to the edges, corners, and remove any stubborn dirt or debris with a razor blade.

Step 2: Rinse the Window Exterior

Wet the window with clear water and use a squeegee blade at a 45-degree angle to scrape off the water. Wipe the squeegee blade with a clean shop cloth and repeat until the outside of the window is completely clean.

Step 3: Clean the Window Interior

Repeat the cleaning process on the inside of the window. Make sure to dry the bottom weatherstrip and window sill with a shop cloth.

Step 4: Cut the Film to Fit

Measure the width and height of the window and cut a piece of Gila film that is at least 1 inch larger on the three other sides. Use a utility knife and straight edge to cut out the film.

Step 5: Apply Tape to the Film

Attach two strips of clear tape to one corner of the film. One on the side facing up and one on the side facing down. Press the tape firmly on each side and then pull the pieces of tape apart to separate the clear lining from the Gila film. Leave the liner on the film with the tape pieces attached.

Step 6: Wet the Film and Window

Thoroughly wet the film with the Gila application solution. Flip it over and wet the other side as well. Wet the window thoroughly with the Gila application solution.

Step 7: Eliminate the Film Lining

Separate the clear lining from the Gila film by pulling the tape apart. While doing so, make sure to have someone hold the film flat. As you peel the liner away, spray the newly exposed side of the Gila film with the Gila application solution. Be careful not to let the exposed liner fold back on itself to avoid it from sticking.

Step 8: Apply the Film

Position the factory edge of the adhesive side of the film, which is the side you peeled the liner from, either at the top or one side of the window. Carefully smooth the rest of the film onto the window glass, using your hands to press it flat.

Step 9: Use a Squeegee on the Film

Thoroughly spray the film with the Gila application solution. Place the squeegee at the top center of the window, with the blade held vertically. Slowly drag the squeegee to the right, smoothing out any air bubbles or wrinkles. Stop 2 inches before reaching the edge. Repeat this step, working from the center to the left.

Step 10: Trim the Film

Trim the excess film at the three edges of the window, leaving a 1/16-inch gap between the edge of the film and the window frame. On the fourth side, cut a 1/16-inch strip away from the factory edge. This gap is necessary as glass expands and shrinks in different temperatures.

Step 11: Squeegee the Film Again

Reapply the application solution to the film and use a squeegee to remove any air bubbles. Start from the center and move to the right, and then from the center to the left. Use a clean, lint-free cloth to absorb any water pockets.

Step 12: Allow the Film to Dry

Let the film cure for a period of seven to ten days. It is normal for the film to appear cloudy or hazy during the curing process.

Tip

To clean windows with Gila film, use Gila application solution or glass cleaner along with a squeegee. Dry them with a clean cloth. Avoid letting an ammonia-based cleaner sit on the film for more than one to two minutes.
