There is nothing more satisfying than climbing into a beautifully made bed. Nothing. However, when we say “luxurious,” we don’t mean “expensive” — because high-end-looking bedding doesn’t have to break the bank. With this in mind, we reached out to design and bedding experts for their advice on how to make bedding look expensive, regardless of your budget.

1. Start your day by making your bed — it’s free!

“The most important thing you can do is make your bed,” says Genevieve Rosen, the founder of Bed Threads. “It may sound obvious, but sometimes we forget to do it when we’re busy or in a rush in the morning. No shame at all! We’ve all been there. But taking five minutes to make your bed will instantly make even the simplest bedding look more expensive. Smooth out the wrinkles, fold back the duvet, fluff up the pillows. Hello, hotel-style!”

2. Ensure that every part of your bed and bedding feels comfortable to you.

Interior designer Marie Burgos of Marie Burgos Design emphasizes the importance of complete comfort. From your mattress to your pillows, choosing pieces that feel comfortable will make your bed look comfortable too — especially if these pieces are made of natural materials.

When it comes to cozy materials, Burgos specifically recommends organic fibers such as linen and cotton, with higher thread counts. “The quality of linen has a huge impact on the overall appearance and feel of your bed, as well as your sleep,” she says.

3. If hotels represent relaxation to you, opt for all-white bedding.

If you desire a luxurious, fresh hotel-like ambiance, Burgos suggests going for crisp white bedding. In fact, if you associate hotels with a sense of relaxation, sleep expert Dr. Sabrina Magid-Katz tells SheKnows that white, hotel-inspired bedding can even improve your sleep.

4. Mix and match your bedding for an editorial touch.

“My tip is to stick to no more than three shades: two contrasting colors create a nice effect, while three can be a delightful bedding sorbet,” says Rosen. “Mixing and matching like this will elevate the appearance of your bedding, and if you already own multiple sets of sheets that complement each other well — for example, a white set and an oatmeal-colored set — you can do this right now at no extra cost.”

When it comes to layering, Burgos also suggests focusing on different textures and volumes. “You can, for instance, combine a duvet cover with a coverlet to add texture or use a different pattern on top of the duvet,” she says. “Then, for added texture, add a faux fur throw or casually drape a folded blanket over the foot of the bed or across the bed itself.”

5. Pair a tall bed with a bedskirt.

If you have a high bed, Burgos recommends covering the bed frame and box springs with a bedskirt. If possible, invest in a bedskirt made of a thick fabric that will stay in place and resist wrinkling.

6. Utilize a headboard.

“I prefer using a fabric upholstered headboard, as it gives a softer appearance compared to a wooden one, for example. It can be cushioned, tufted, or solid… The crucial aspect is that it should have a significant impact in terms of its size,” Burgos explains. “Having a tall headboard or an oversized long headboard is an excellent way to create a luxurious bedroom.”

7. Enjoy experimenting with throw pillows.

“Throw pillows are a fantastic way to incorporate a classic stripe or a subtle burst of color without making a long-term commitment,” Decorist designer Christina Manzo informs Hunker. “They are perfect for switching out during different seasons and can effortlessly set the mood for your bedroom.” Although the number of pillows may vary depending on the size of your bed, Manzo specifically suggests using three square euro pillows for a king-sized bed.
